Door Handing Explained

Many locks, door closers, exit devices, and other commercial door hardware have specified handing. In simple terms, the designation indicates which way the door swings (left vs. right, or inward vs. outward) based on the operator being on the outside of the door.

Overview

There are 5 types of handing, explained below along with an image:

  1. Right Hand (RH)
  2. Left Hand (LH)
  3. Right Hand Reverse (RHR)
  4. Left Hand Reverse (LHR)
  5. Non-handed / field reversible / universal / interchangeable
